The main difference between virtual autism and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is that virtual autism is reversible and temporary. Conversely, ASD is a neurological condition that requires management throughout a person’s life.

The term virtual autism is relatively new and, as such, has been met with skepticism from some professionals who do not believe the condition is real. Some experts in the field believe virtual autism does not exist, and what they are observing is ASD. Furthermore, there is not yet a formal assessment process to diagnose and differentiate virtual autism from ASD.

This article will go into more detail about the history and symptoms of virtual autism, as well as preventative and proactive measures to take to prevent and help reduce symptoms of virtual autism.

       Tabla de contenidos

Background on the Concept of Virtual Autism
Symptoms Associated with Virtual Autism
The Role of Technology in Child Development
Diagnosis of Virtual Autism
Treatment and Management Strategies
Preventive Measures
Expert Opinions and Research
FAQs

Does virtual autism cause sensory issues?

Can virtual autism be reversible?

What is the best therapy for virtual autism?

Conclusion

Background on the Concept of Virtual Autism

The term virtual autism was coined by a Romanian psychologist named Marius Teodor Zamfir in 2018. This psychologist began to observe a big difference in how very young children were “recovering” from autism after diagnosis, showing large and significant improvements in all areas.

He began to research and delve deeper into the effect of the modern world on autism, and during this process, the effect of TV particularly stood out as a highly influential component. Specifically, he found that children in his study who were diagnosed with autism often spent 4-5 hours a day in a virtual environment, such as watching TV, using a tablet, smartphone, etc.

After the therapeutic process, he found most children had “recovered” to such an extent that they were able to enter mainstream education. In some instances, this occurred in 3-4 months. Other parents opted not to start therapy but agreed to eliminate technology, which resulted in some improvements in a matter of 2-3 weeks.

Marius then decided to assess screen time during intake with new clients. What he found was that, although both ASD and virtual autism present very similarly during the diagnostic process, recovery follows two very different paths. For typical ASD, early intervention begins between the ages of 2-3 years old and, after 2-4 years of therapy results in 50% of the children’s integration into general education classes. For virtual autism, therapy occurs for only 2-4 hours a day for 6-18 months and results in a much higher integration into general education. This leads to the hypothesis that virtual autism is a different phenomenon from ASD.

Furthermore, the term virtual autism started gaining traction more frequently post-pandemic when many parents were forced to increase their children’s screen time as they had to balance their jobs, home responsibilities, and other children’s school demands. Because of this mass increase in screen time, a lot of children began presenting with these autism-like symptoms, which didn’t quite fit in the typical ASD criteria.

Get Caring, In-Home ABA Therapy, Fast

Fill in the form below to discuss how your child could start therapy quickly, without the stress:

<!-- NOTE: These fields are optional debugging elements. Other cognitive issues present include difficulties with problem-solving, learning, and processing information.

Attention Deficits:

Attention Deficits include increases in hyperactivity, restlessness, task switching, and impulsivity as well as challenges with sitting still and difficulties with following directions and staying on-task.

Behavior regulation challenges:

Challenges with behavior regulation include increased irritability, difficulty managing emotions, and mood swings. Typically, these occur when screen time is reduced or they are prompted to engage in a non-tech alternative as they struggle to spend time apart from the screens.

As mentioned, the main differences between virtual autism and ASD can be seen in the differences in recovery. However, there are some subtle differences between the two. For example, children with virtual autism often exhibit a language delay, whereas children with ASD show more globalized issues with communication that are more pervasive and are more than just a delay. Similarly, with social interactions, children with ASD will show a much larger deficit, whereas children with virtual autism may just be more socially withdrawn.

In terms of behavioral regulation, children with virtual autism will mainly display mood swings and irritability related to technology being removed whereas children with ASD may have tantrums and meltdowns related to a wide variety of stimuli, such as changes in routine, noises, denied access to a wide variety of preferred activities, etc.

Lastly, when examining play, children with ASD engage in more rigid behaviors, such as repetitive actions, lining items up, and engaging in self-stimulatory behaviors with the toys.

The Role of Technology in Child Development

A 2023 review examined a range of research and found that, overall, excessive screen use is detrimental to child development in various ways. The study found that, overall, a controlled and moderated amount of screen time (less than 2 hours a day) can be educational and aid in learning, such as improving reading skills and creative thinking.

However, when screen time begins to go above 2 hours a day, multiple studies in the review demonstrated negative health outcomes such as obesity, sleep disorders, mental health conditions such as depression and anxiety, as well as the previously discussed impacts on social and emotional development.

Furthermore, several studies in the review found that children with prolonged screen time had difficulties interpreting emotions and exhibited more aggressive behavior. Interestingly, the review cited a study that looked at the effect of maternal screen time. Independent of the child’s screen time and accounting for the mother’s age, educational level, birth order, etc, the researchers found a positive correlation between increased maternal screen time and the child’s language skills.

One of the leading brain scientists conducted research on babies under a year old, comparing brain activity when presented with screens vs when interacting with people. Children were split into two conditions. In one condition, infants were exposed to Mandarin words by their mothers; in the other, they listened to words on a screen. To assess the child’s learning, they measured head turning towards Mandarin words and brain activity, both of which have been shown to indicate word recognition in toddlers. Results showed that he babies in the screen condition showed no learning and minimal brain activity. Babies in the human condition were much better at discriminating words and showed much more active brains.

This research shows that infants are not capable of learning from screens, including language, emotional regulation, and problem-solving. Thus, if infants spend most of their time watching screens rather than interacting with adults and other people, they are not learning the valuable skills essential to their development.

Diagnosis of Virtual Autism

Diagnosing virtual autism can be a challenge as it is not recognized in the DSM, and there is no diagnostic tool to diagnose or differentiate the condition from ASD. Instead, diagnosticians use a comprehensive evaluation, including standard ASD tools, and ask questions about a child’s screen time, habits, and behaviors around technology. If you suspect that your child watches screens excessively and exhibits challenging behaviors regarding the reduction of screen time, alert your doctor to this fact and inquire about virtual autism.

However, virtual autism is a somewhat controversial topic in the field, so be prepared for pushback. As of yet, virtual autism is not recognized by any of the central regulatory bodies, although this does not mean it is not a real condition. Until more research is carried out and published, highlighting further the differences between the conditions, virtual autism diagnosis may be challenging and controversial to some.

Treatment and Management Strategies

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends no screen time for children under two and no more than 1 hour a day for those aged 2-4. For toddlers under 1 year old, the WHO recommends being physically active with your baby multiple times a day, such as interactive floor-based play, including 30 minutes on their tummy while awake. The WHO also recommends that children of this age spend no more than 1 hour at a time “restrained” in strollers, high chairs, strapped to parents, etc, and during this time, the WHO suggests reading or storytelling with parents instead of screen time.

For children aged 1-2 years old, it is recommended to spend at least 180 minutes a day engaged in any type of physical activity at any intensity. Examples include games such as chase, ball games, races, obstacle courses at home or the park, dancing, skipping, etc. When it comes to sedentary time, it is still recommended that this occurs for no longer than an hour at a time. For one-year-olds, no screen time is still recommended, whilst for 2-year-olds, screen time should not exceed one hour. Instead, parents can read, tell stories, or sing. Overall, the more time spent engaging with adults, the better.

In terms of sleeping, infants less than a year old should have between 14-17 hours of sleep for 0-3 month olds and 12-16 hours for 4-11 month olds. Toddlers aged 1-2 years old need between 11 and 14 hours of good-quality sleep. As screens impact the quality of sleep, no screen time 2 hours before bed is recommended to decrease the effect on sleep and improve sleep time.

Preventive Measures

Setting healthy boundaries for screen time based on the age and developmental needs mentioned above is instrumental to preventing virtual autism from developing. At times, such as when parents are doing chores or trying to get things done, having a child be occupied and distracted by a screen can be helpful.

The New York Presbyterian recommends turning on the TV for a short show like Sesame Street or Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood. These types of programs are suggested as they show characters engaging and playing appropriately, showing positive social skills.

During screen time, studies suggest co-watching as much as possible with your child, which includes commenting on the program, asking questions, and repeating back the content. This will increase the likelihood that your child understands the show’s content and, therefore, learns from it.

The most damaging type of technology to give to your child is a tablet or phone, specifically with YouTube. The reasons for this are many, starting with addiction. With a website like YouTube, the algorithm learns what your child likes watching and caters to these interests. This makes YouTube a highly addictive website for your child, as they are being spoon-fed their favorite shows with minimal effort.

Secondly, YouTube videos are usually short, and the child can click or swipe on another video the second they get bored. This type of viewing creates impatience and inattention. Rather than teaching children to wait and follow the story patiently, YouTube creates an environment where children become accustomed to watching the most rewarding, preferred content at all times.

Expert Opinions and Research

As previously mentioned, some experts do not believe that virtual autism is a separate diagnosis from ASD. As there is no formal or regulated assessment process to diagnose virtual autism. This may mean that if a doctor does not diagnose ASD as they believe what they are observing is virtual autism, they may not be provided with the supports they need. This includes school support, access to appropriate therapies, etc. This could be detrimental and affect the course of the young child’s life, as early intervention is one of the most significant predictors of a child’s future success.

Whether virtual autism is regular ASD or not, one thing is clear: spending too long in virtual environments is detrimental to child development. Reiterating from previous research, small children learn virtually nothing from screens and show little to no brain activity compared to interactions with their parents. Furthermore, increased screen time leads to cognitive, behavioral, and communication impairments and delays.

FAQs

Does virtual autism cause sensory issues?

There is a link between virtual autism and sensory issues. Increased time in virtual environments can create sensory processing issues, which can then lead to hyper or hypersensitivity.

Can virtual autism be reversible?

Virtual autism is reversible. Removing technology can only reverse some symptoms, but for the best results, this approach should be paired with therapeutic intervention.

What is the best therapy for virtual autism?

Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy can be a useful therapy for virtual autism. ABA is an evidence-based approach used with children with ASD to teach social skills, communication, and self-regulation skills, which are the main affected areas in virtual autism. Speech and occupational therapy, in conjunction with ABA therapy, may also be needed if the communication and motor deficits are particularly affected.

Conclusion

In conclusion, virtual autism is a set of symptoms that mimics those of ASD and is caused when children under the age of 2 years old have spent prolonged time with technology. The most common manifestations are communication delays, social deficits, and behavioral issues around technology.

Monitoring and limiting your child’s use of technology is essential to healthy child development, especially before the age of 2. If you feel your child is not meeting their developmental milestones or is exhibiting problematic technology-related behaviors, seek professional advice.
